| Sean Hocking's Mashup Special - February 2012 As most of my listeners will now know I run a highly unsuccessful little record label called Metal Postcard Records. The label started life with a 7" entitled Imagine This by Sydney based Wax Audio; Lennon's Imagine as sung by GW Bush which became runaway viral YouTube hit at the time and even earned praise via email from Yoko. To my mind an audio mash up has always meant either political comment or making something Dada inspired rather than the endless trite Lady Gaga vs somebody else mp3s you now find littering all corners of the www. With this in mind here's an hour long selection of music that highlights some of the politics of the last decade with some of the odder and more experimental mash-ups I've heard. Particular favorites include Cassette Boy's "Fly Me To New York" which would easily sit in my top ten of all time along with "Robert Johnson vs Karl Heinz Stockhausen" by New York based Fuckintosh and Mato's re-working of Public Enemy's "Bring The Noise" in uptempo Kingston Style. | Mark Whitby - February 2012 Still without a copy of the new Gonjasufi album at the time of recording the show, I decided the only thing for it was to make the best damn Gonjasufi-less radio show possible. This effort was aided considerably by a session mix from Dementio13 and bolstered by new releases from the likes of Venetian Snares, Pindar's Apes and Black Dice. From right across Europe came reinforcements to aid us in our quest, including tunes from Zabo T from Portugal, Switzerland's Argot Digamma, Belgium's Mumbai Science, Italy's Dziga remixing France's Guitoud with predictably stunning results and a couple of old but certainly far from jaded Hungarian tracks from Pajaro and Street Violence. News of our plight reached the southern hemisphere, the result a double feature of Metal Postcard releases courtesy of Australians Worng and Ollo and a further Antipodean brace from Feral Media's excellent Hinterlandt-inspired compilation. From rather closer to home, for me anyway, get acquainted with show favourite-elect Long Hat Pins from Salford and bathe further in the glory of the magnificent Snailhead while sampling a melodic gem from Liverpool's Tear Talk and marvelling at the results of the rather wonderful Churn Milk Joan collaboration. Throw in a few more blinders from the Abaga, Bleeding Gold and Melting Records labels, add loads more I don't have space to mention, and you forget what it was you were missing in the first place. Fast-forward six years, and a veritable shedload of tapes later, and Awesome Tapes is now a proper record label, its debut release coming in the shape of Nâ Hawa Doumbia's excellent 1982 album 'La Grande Cantatrice Malienne Vol. 3'.
